  • Bleached = fragile. Rinse with lukewarm then cold water (closes the cuticles = shine), little or no heat, gentle detangling on damp hair with conditioner in your hands.
  • Your cast is GOLD, so PURPLE is the right pigment β€” you already own it. _Checked against a photo on 31/07/2026._ Blue is for orange/copper; yours doesn't read orange, so blue would be the wrong correction and I've withdrawn that buy recommendation. Revisit only if it shifts orange. Nothing "natural" lightens: honey, lemon and chamomile do not β€” see the sources block. Chamomile actively adds golden pigment, which is the exact opposite of what you need.
  • Going lighter = the salon, not the kitchen. Anything that genuinely lifts pigment is alkaline peroxide, i.e. more damage on already-bleached hair. What you can do at home is make the blonde you have read lighter: neutralise the brass, and get the cuticle flat so it reflects light instead of scattering it (cold rinse, oils, no frizz). That's the honey mask's actual job.

The one number that matters: your mid-lengths are 1.36Γ— as saturated as your own skin. On the blended bronde you saved (@ashleasimmonshair, the β€œafter”), that same hair-to-skin ratio is 0.64 β€” the hair is about half as saturated as the face. That ratio is used because it survives the unknown white balance of a screenshot; absolute chroma read off someone else's phone photo would be invented. So the gap between you and your reference is roughly half the saturation β€” a SATURATION problem, not a lightness one. Which is exactly what a no-lift gloss corrects.

And the line you're afraid of is smaller than you think. Worn loose, root-to-mid lightness differs by only ~4 L*. In the slicked-back photos of the same day it measured 27–32 L*. Most of that β€œhard demarcation” is a styling artefact, not your colour.

Ask for this

  • Demi-permanent gloss / toner, no lift, neutral–ash (violet-based) on mid-lengths and ends. Target: cut mid-length saturation by about half, pull the hue off the gold side (62Β°) toward neutral.
  • + a SHADOW ROOT (not a plain root smudge β€” the two differ: a smudge is for small root/length differences, a shadow root is deeper and taken further down, and it is the one used to blend a natural dark root into blonde lengths). This is the step that creates the seamless look in every photo you saved β€” your reference keeps a darker root, it just melts it.
  • Take the ENDS one shade deeper, not brighter β€” deposit makes fine hair read thicker, and you are keeping the tapered ends (see the cut brief). Say β€œporous ends”. Bleached ends grab toner darker and ashier than the mid-lengths. Ask for a filler / porosity equaliser or a softer formula on the last few cm β€” otherwise you get muddy or grey ends.
  • Show the two rejects, not just the target. Stripy chunky banding (@theunorthodoxstylist) and hard line + straw ends (@ashleasimmonshair, β€œthe before”). Naming what you don't want is worth more than naming what you do.

What a gloss will NOT do β€” know this before you sit down

  • It cannot lighten. Redken states it plainly for Shades EQ: β€œSince Shades EQ is a gloss, it doesn't lift or lighten the color of your hair.” The pale cool blondes you saved (@martafeschuk, the salon-lift clip, the creamy waves) are several levels lighter than you β€” that road is more bleach, i.e. another damage cycle on hair that already reads dry. The blended bronde is the one reference reachable with zero lift.
  • It fades. Manufacturer claim: up to 28 shampoos, 4–6 weeks. You wash daily, so take the short end β€” call it ~4 weeks, less on porous ends. Budget for it rather than being disappointed by it.
  • It will not fix texture β€” and texture is costing you at least as much as tone (below).
Priority order, honestly: 1) trim the tapered ends β€” every reference you picked has dense, blunt ends plus a blow-dry; 2) gloss + root smudge; 3) smoothing / drying technique. Bleach is not on this list until the ends stop reading dry.

Ask for this

  • Blunt perimeter, scissors only. No razor, no thinning shears, no point-cutting on the ends. At a 1–2 cm budget how it's cut matters more than how much: a blunt line reads dense, a razored or point-cut line reads see-through β€” which is the exact problem you're trying to solve.
  • Face-framing layers starting at the COLLARBONE, not the cheekbone. The standard version of this cut starts them at the cheekbone; at 1–2 cm that removes weight from a perimeter you can't spare. Lower start = movement without thinning the ends.
  • No internal layering. Fine hair + long internal layers = exactly the see-through ends you already have.
  • Re-dust every 6–8 weeks. This is the important one given your choice: your taper starts well above the 2 cm you're cutting, so this trim doesn't reach it. Regular dusting stops it advancing instead of fixing it in one sitting.
The honest limit, said once. At 1–2 cm the perimeter still reads thin β€” the taper in the 23 Aug photo begins far higher than 2 cm. You're choosing length over density. That's a legitimate trade and it's yours to make; just don't expect this trim to give you the ends in your reference photos. (Splits themselves can't be repaired by any product β€” cutting is the only removal, conditioners just glue them shut temporarily. Standard cosmetic-science position; I couldn't open a paywall-free paper to quote today, so take it as consensus rather than a cited figure.)

β‡’ Which means the colour has to carry the density. On the ends, ask for the gloss to go one shade DEEPER, not brighter. Deposit makes fine hair read thicker, and porous bleached ends take deposit easily β€” so this works with your hair instead of against it. ⚠︎ Patch test behind the ear first and leave 24 h. Tea tree is a known contact allergen, more so once the bottle has oxidised, and your scalp is post-bleach. Your own rule of spot-only applies to the face; a 1% rinse-off on the scalp is the studied use β€” but test anyway.
Part the hair in sections, apply to the scalp (not the lengths), and massage gently 2–3 min β€” the massage is part of the protocol, not an afterthought. Leave 3 h, rinse with warm water, then your gentle shampoo.
Frequency: every other day for 4 weeks if your scalp is actually flaky/itchy, then 1Γ—/week to maintain. If your scalp is fine, 1Γ—/week is plenty.

βœ… Honey on the roots is fine β€” the "never the roots" rule is about OIL. Honey is water-soluble and rinses clean, so it won't grease you up. Oil on your roots would.

⏱ Why 3 h here is evidence-based, unlike on the lengths. Al-Waili (2001) used exactly this: 90% honey in warm water, 2–3 min massage, left 3 h, every other day. Itching gone in a week, scaling gone in a week, lesions clear in two. So the 3 h number on the scalp isn't arbitrary β€” it's the tested protocol. On the lengths, 2 h remains the ceiling for a different reason (oil loading).
⚠︎ Don't apply to broken, raw or burnt scalp. And if flaking/itching is persistent or worsening, that's a dermatologist question, not a kitchen one.

B Β· Cattier green clay β€” for GREASY-ROOT weeks (10–15 min, NOT 3 h)

You already have this (green clay + peppermint EO, sold as a face mask for oily skin). Green clay adsorbs sebum, which is the one thing honey doesn't do β€” so this is the tool for the weeks your roots grease up fast, alternating with mask A, never mixed with it.
How: thin layer on the scalp only, 10–15 min, rinse thoroughly, then gentle shampoo.
⚠︎ Never on the lengths, and never let it dry hard. Clay on porous bleached hair means dryness and tangling β€” this is exactly the mistake to avoid. Mist it or rinse before it cracks.
⚠︎ Not for 3 h. The 3 h number belongs to the honey protocol. Clay left that long just desiccates your scalp and your hair.
⚠︎ Peppermint β‰  growth. The "peppermint beats minoxidil" study everyone cites (Oh 2014) was done in mice, at 3%, for 4 weeks. There is no human trial. What menthol reliably does is feel cooling and take the edge off itch β€” that's sensory relief, which is worth having, but don't file it under growth.
πŸ“š Why honey (and lemon, and chamomile) will not lighten your hair β€” sources

The claim. Honey contains glucose oxidase; diluted with water it slowly generates hydrogen peroxide β€” the same molecule used in bleach. True. The claim fails on dose and on pH, independently.

1. Dose β€” off by ~500Γ—. Bang, Buntting & Molan (2003) measured peroxide accumulation across honey dilutions: the maximum occurs at 30–50% honey (v/v) and peaks at 1–2 mmol/L. Undiluted honeys measure lower still β€” 0.010–0.092 mmol/L across 30 authentic samples (Alygizou et al., 2021). The weakest salon developer, 3% Hβ‚‚Oβ‚‚ ("10 vol"), is 30 g/L Γ· 34.01 g/mol = β‰ˆ880 mmol/L. So the best case for honey is 880 Γ· 2 β‰ˆ 440–880Γ— too weak.

2. pH β€” wrong species entirely. Peroxide doesn't bleach melanin as Hβ‚‚Oβ‚‚; the active species is the perhydroxyl anion HOO⁻, which is why bleach is alkalised to pH ~9–10 (Chan et al., 2017). Hβ‚‚Oβ‚‚ has a pKa β‰ˆ 11.6, so at honey's pH of 3.2–4.5 essentially none of it is deprotonated. Even if you somehow had the concentration, at that pH it would sit there inert.

3. Lemon. Same failure, plus a real downside: expressed lemon peel oil carries furocoumarins (bergapten & co.) which are phototoxic β€” sun on treated skin/scalp can burn. Lemon juice is just acid; it doesn't oxidise melanin.

4. Chamomile. Apigenin is a yellow flavone that deposits β€” it's the basis of every "golden highlights" product on the market (Klorane's whole chamomile line). It warms hair up. Your stated goal is to reduce a red/copper cast, so this works against you.

What honey is actually good for: it's ~80% sugars (fructose/glucose), which are humectants β€” they bind water into the cortex. On bleached, porous, curly hair that means softness, less frizz, and a flatter cuticle. Flatter cuticle = specular reflection = the hair reads brighter and lighter. That's a real, visible effect. It is not lifting a single shade of pigment.

5. Oils and "strengthening" β€” the evidence is genuinely mixed, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The famous result is Rele & Mohile (2003): on bleached and UV-damaged hair, only coconut oil significantly reduced protein loss, pre- and post-wash β€” lauric acid being low-MW, straight-chain and keratin-affine, so it penetrates rather than sitting on top. But that paper has a real methodological criticism: oil adds weight to the tress, which can make absorbed water look smaller as a percentage without any water actually being blocked. And LourenΓ§o et al. (2024) went the other way β€” after a 24 h soak, bleached fibres treated with coconut oil measured weaker than untreated bleached fibres (break stress βˆ’11.9%, Young's modulus βˆ’12.7%, p<0.05), even though the oil penetrated more deeply than in virgin hair.

Honest read: a moderate pre-shampoo oil step is very likely net-positive β€” it reduces mechanical friction during the wash, which is when damaged hair actually breaks. What is not supported is "more oil, for longer, is better", and on bleached hair there's a published signal pointing the other way. Hence: 2 tsp in the mix, 2 h ceiling, 1–2Γ—/month for the long version.

Also worth knowing: "hygral fatigue" β€” the idea that repeated wetting fatigues the fibre like a bent paperclip β€” is poorly evidenced. Water breaks hydrogen bonds that reform on drying; the papers invoking hygral fatigue mostly cite each other rather than data. So a long mask is not dangerous on those grounds. The real reason wet hair suffers is mechanical: it's weaker when wet, so it's handling β€” combing, rubbing, tying it up β€” that does the damage, not the water sitting there. Clip it up and leave it alone for the 2 h.

6. The scalp mask β€” what's behind it, and what isn't. The 3 h honey protocol comes from Al-Waili (2001): 30 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis/dandruff, 90% crude honey in warm water, 2–3 min massage, left 3 h, every other day for 4 weeks. Itching relieved and scaling gone within a week, lesions clear within two, and no relapse over 6 months in the 15 who continued weekly vs 12/15 relapsing in those who stopped. Caveats, stated plainly: n=30, single author, no control arm in the treatment phase, and the reported improvement in hair loss was subjective/patient-reported, not measured. Treat it as good for calming the scalp β€” which it plausibly is, honey being antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory β€” and not as a hair-growth result.

6b. Tea tree β€” the best-evidenced thing you already own. Satchell et al. (2002), J Am Acad Dermatol: 126 patients, randomised, single-blind, 5% tea tree oil shampoo daily with a 3-minute contact time for 4 weeks. Scalp lesion score fell 91.0 β†’ 53.0 vs 99.7 β†’ 88.2 on placebo (p<0.001); self-assessed itchiness improved 23% vs 12% (p<0.03); no serious adverse events. Human, on scalp, placebo-controlled β€” better on all three counts than the rosemary trial below. Honest limit: only one patient per group was completely dandruff-free at 4 weeks, so this is reduction, not cure. And tea tree is a genuine contact allergen, especially oxidised β€” patch test.

6c. Peppermint (your Cattier clay mask). The famous "peppermint beat minoxidil" claim is Oh, Park & Kim (2014), Toxicol Res 30(4):297–304 β€” 3% peppermint oil, 4 weeks, in C57BL/6 mice. It reported greater follicle number and depth than 3% minoxidil, with raised ALP and IGF-1. There is no human trial. Menthol's cooling/anti-itch effect is real but sensory. Use the clay for sebum, not for growth.

7. Rosemary oil β€” the honest version. Panahi et al. (2015) randomised 100 patients to rosemary oil or minoxidil 2% for 6 months: both groups gained hair count by month 6, with no significant difference between them, and less scalp itching on rosemary. Widely quoted as "rosemary = minoxidil". Two things that quote leaves out: the participants were all male, with androgenetic alopecia β€” not your situation β€” and there was no placebo arm, so "both improved equally" can't distinguish two working treatments from two doing very little over six months. It's a reasonable optional addition at 1–2%; it is not a proven growth treatment for you.

8. And the thing that actually governs your length. Your density looks normal β€” you don't appear to have a shedding problem, so follicle stimulation is solving a problem you may not have. Length is gained at the root and lost at the mid-shaft: bleached hair that snaps never banks what the follicle grew. So the highest-yield "growth" intervention available to you is the unglamorous one β€” fewer breakage opportunities. Less tension, less heat, protein kept to its weekly cap, detangling only with slip, and a trim when the ends go see-through.
